The test simulates a corrosive atmosphere using a saltwater mist, typically comprising a 5% sodium chloride solution.

The salt spray test procedure follows standardized methods like ASTM B117 or ISO 9227. Test samples are placed inside a salt spray chamber at a specified angle and exposed to a constant fog of salt solution at 35°C. Duration varies from a few hours to several days depending on the material and industry requirements. Observations are made for signs of rust, blistering, or coating failure, which helps assess the long-term corrosion resistance of the product.
