Before heading to the airport, make sure your carry-on bag meets United Airlines' size requirements. Passengers in Basic Economy can only bring a personal item, unless they qualify for an exemption. If a full-sized carry-on is brought while in Basic Economy, it must be checked at the gate, incurring a $25 handling fee plus standard checked bag charges. Additionally, those flying on United Express regional flights may need to gate-check their carry-on due to limited overhead space.
